Alternative Photographic Processes

In all of these processes, negatives or objects are placed on top of paper and exposed to light. Then, one adjusts variables such as exposure time, the amount of sun or rain, plant material used, the quality of the transparency, and the objects or negatives used to bring a finished image to life.

  • Anthotype: photosensitive material collected from plants (e.g. beets) is coated onto paper. The color of the result depends on the plant.

  • Caffenol: a film and paper developer consisting of coffee, washing soda and vitamin c. Results in an image in shades of brown.

  • Chlorophyll: uses a leaf as base instead of paper, and sunlight to bleach the exposed leaf.

  • Cyanotype: a mix of ammonium iron citrate and potassium ferricyanide is coated on paper. Results in an image in shades of blue.

  • Lumen: made with black and white photographic paper.

  • Pinhole: a camera obscure is created via a small hole in a light proof container. Add film, and you capture an image from the pinhole.
