Quiet lives of bravery, decency, and kindness exist right in our midst. The lives of people interviewed for this book touched my life. Their voices heard in person and through the computer.  Their faces in front of my camera. Their life stories a gift. 

Transformed by sunlight, these images are layered and textured stories in response to the interviews. With light, you never know what you will get. It’s unpredictable, mysterious. Like life—weather, environment, water, and people have tangled with these images, imprinted, and impressed them—memories join and bind them together.

These images are published in Threads: Stories of Resilience in Catawba County by Kate Crecelius (Author) and Noelle Rasmussen (Illustrator), a book that celebrates the ways people of Catawba County, North Carolina overcome adversity and recover from hardship. It demonstrates the ability of the human spirit to reach beyond difficulties through image and story. Commonalities offer insight and inspiration and provide a statement of tenacity and hope. The book celebrates the region and its people and speaks of universal human characteristics.
